The Structure and Working Principle of Oil-immersed Transformers:
The oil-immersed transformer is structurally similar to the ordinary transformer. They are a type of transformer classified by the insulation method of the core. Thus they possess the important features of oil-immersed coils which mitigate the thermal effects on internal parts.
The basic components of oil immersed transformer are core , windings and bushings . the core gives a path for magnetic flux. The magnetic field is produced by the windings. They consist of coils of conductor wound on the core and insulated with cardboard diaphragms and shielding layers. The thickness of the winding insulation increases with higher voltage. Bushings connect the transformer windings to the substation.
Oil immersed transformer is used in power distribution or distribution station. Their core and coils are immersed in oil . The oil serves as cooling and insulation . The oil is circulated by convection in oil pipes in the coils and flows around the coil and core assemblies. In small power transformers the tank itself provides the external cooling of the oil, whereas in large power transformers an air-cooled radiator is used.
Purpose of Using Oil Immersed Transformers:
1. Oil immersed transformers can be installed on the ground, on a base or on a pole and hence they are suitable for outdoor environments. They are suitable for a wide range of applications, including power transmission and distribution networks, renewable energy generation, and small-scale industrial applications.
2. Oil-immersed transformers have large capacity, so they save a lot of electricity, minimise power loss, conserve energy and reduce user costs. Also, the oil in the transformer cools the inner core, thus increasing the lifespan of the transformer and its electrical performance.
Normal operating conditions:
1. Max. environment temperature ≤ +40°C
2. Ambient temperature minimum ≥ -25℃
3. Standard installation altitude ≤1000m
4. Special conditions require derating.
